If you have dental anxiety, you’re not alone. One study estimates that around 60% of people suffer from some level of dental anxiety, and about 33% of people have avoided going to the dentist due to fear, nerves, or anxiety.

However, regular dental visits are essential for maintaining your oral health and well-being. If you have been putting off dental care out of fear, here are a few steps you can take to get more comfortable with dental appointments:

1. Identify Your Fear And Triggers

Dental anxiety is not “one-size-fits-all.” Different patients are afraid of different things. According to the study referenced in our introduction, the most common triggers and causes of dental anxiety are:

  • Fear of pain (39%)

  • The smell of chemicals/dental offices (24%)

  • The sound of a dental drill (21%)

  • Fear or discomfort due to being stuck in the dentist’s chair for a long time (7%)

  • Fear of keeping their mouths open for a long time (5%)

Identifying the source of your fear can help you develop the coping mechanisms that you can use to feel more safe and comfortable. Take some time to think about what bothers you the most.

2. Choose A Compassionate Dentist

Having the right dentist is essential for dealing with dental anxiety. For example, if you’re afraid of keeping your mouth open for a long period of time, you can talk to your dentist about it and they can develop a treatment plan that allows you to take breaks and close your mouth.

3. Bring A Friend With Your To Your Appointment

Simply having someone with you to comfort you and be by your side can really help with dental anxiety. You shouldn’t feel self-conscious or embarrassed about bringing someone with you . We welcome your friends or family members, and we will ensure that they can be in the room to comfort you and provide you with any support you need
